Practise recognising and managing a seizure emergency in a dental setting, following NEBDN OSCE expectations.
Scenario
A patient suddenly loses consciousness and begins to convulse during a dental procedure. Their body becomes rigid and jerking movements are observed. You are the dental nurse assisting the clinician.
Your Task
- Identify the condition
- Initiate immediate safety management
- Protect the patient from injury
- Monitor the duration of the seizure
- Escalate care if the seizure is prolonged or does not resolve

Key Learning Points
- Seizures involve sudden abnormal electrical activity in the brain causing convulsions
- Do not restrain the patient; protect them from injury and remove nearby hazards
- Do not place anything in the patient’s mouth during a seizure
- Administer oxygen if required once it is safe to do so
- If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes or repeats, call 999 immediately
