Model Answer / Ideal Response

A strong response should be calm, reassuring, and patient-focused.

Step 1 — Recognise the Concern

Recognise the patient’s feelings without dismissing them.

Example:

“I understand that many people feel nervous before dental treatment.”

Allow the patient time to express their concerns.

Step 2 — Offer Reassurance

Speak calmly and confidently.

Where appropriate:

  • Explain that the dental team will support them
  • Encourage them to ask questions
  • Let them know their concerns are understood

Avoid making unrealistic promises.

Step 3 — Encourage Communication

Invite the patient to tell the dental team if they become uncomfortable.

For example:

  • Discuss agreeing on a stop signal with the dentist.
  • Encourage the patient to speak up during treatment if they need a break.

This helps the patient feel more in control.

Step 4 — Remain Within Your Role

Provide reassurance and emotional support without giving advice outside your professional competence.

Refer any treatment-specific questions to the dentist when appropriate.

Step 5 — Promote a Positive Patient Experience

Patients who feel listened to are often more relaxed and cooperative.

Professional communication helps build trust and confidence throughout treatment.
