OSCE Practice – Seizure (Epileptic Seizure)

Practise recognising and managing a seizure emergency in a dental setting, following NEBDN OSCE expectations.

Scenario

A patient suddenly loses consciousness and begins to convulse during a dental procedure. Their body becomes rigid and jerking movements are observed. You are the dental nurse assisting the clinician.

Your Task

  • Identify the condition
  • Initiate immediate safety management
  • Protect the patient from injury
  • Monitor the duration of the seizure
  • Escalate care if the seizure is prolonged or does not resolve

Key Learning Points

  • Seizures involve sudden abnormal electrical activity in the brain causing convulsions
  • Do not restrain the patient; protect them from injury and remove nearby hazards
  • Do not place anything in the patient’s mouth during a seizure
  • Administer oxygen if required once it is safe to do so
  • If the seizure lasts longer than 5 minutes or repeats, call 999 immediately
