Model Answer / Ideal Response

A strong response should be calm, reassuring, and adapted to the child’s level of understanding.

Step 1 — Acknowledge the Patient's Concerns

Recognise that it is normal to feel uncertain before a new procedure.

Example:

“It’s understandable to have questions if you’ve never had inhalation sedation before.”

Allow the patient time to express any concerns.

Step 2 — Provide Reassurance

Offer reassurance while remaining within your professional role.

For example:

  • Explain that the dentist will fully discuss the procedure.
  • Let the patient know the dental team will support them throughout the appointment.
  • Encourage them to ask questions if they are unsure about anything.

Avoid giving detailed clinical explanations or guarantees.

Step 3 — Support the Dentist

Continue preparing the surgery and inhalation sedation equipment as directed.

Remain attentive to the patient’s wellbeing and communicate any concerns to the dentist.

Good teamwork contributes to a safe and positive patient experience.

Step 4 — Remain Within Your Scope of Practice

Provide emotional support and answer general questions where appropriate.

Refer detailed questions about sedation, risks, benefits, or suitability to the dentist.

Always work within your professional competence.

Step 5 — Promote a Positive Experience

Patients who feel informed and supported are often more relaxed before treatment.

Professional communication and reassurance help build confidence and trust.
