Model Answer / Ideal Response

A strong response should be calm, professional, and respectful while maintaining confidentiality.

Step 1 — Acknowledge the Patient’s Concern

Respond supportively without dismissing the patient.

Example:

“I understand it can feel difficult choosing between treatment options.”

Patients should feel listened to and supported.

Step 2 — Remain Within Scope of Practice

Avoid:

  • Recommending treatment options
  • Giving personal opinions
  • Choosing treatment for the patient

Remain within your professional role.

Example:

“The dentist will be best placed to discuss the treatment options with you.”

Step 3 — Support Communication

You may appropriately:

  • Reassure the patient
  • Encourage questions
  • Help facilitate further discussion with the clinician

Professional support remains important.

Step 4 — Escalate Appropriately

If the patient remains unsure:

  • Inform the clinician
  • Support further discussion
