OSCE Practice – Dental Unit Waterlines (DUWL) & Legionella Prevention
Practise recognising and managing dental unit waterline safety and Legionella prevention in a dental setting, following NEBDN OSCE expectations.
Scenario
The examiner asks you to demonstrate how to manage dental unit waterlines (DUWLs) to reduce the risk of Legionella.
Your Task
- Identify correct waterline maintenance procedures
- Perform appropriate flushing protocols
- Recognise risks of biofilm and Legionella contamination
- Follow infection control and safety standards
- Ensure compliance with HTM 01-05 guidance

Key Learning Points
- Dental unit waterlines should be flushed for at least 2 minutes at the start of each day
- Between patients, waterlines should be flushed for 20–30 seconds
- Acceptable microbial levels are ≤200 CFU/mL (colony forming units)
- Legionella bacteria grow best in stagnant water between 20–45°C
- Flushing alone is not sufficient — chemical treatment and maintenance protocols are required
