Scenario
A patient develops sudden swelling of the lips and face during a dental procedure. They are struggling to breathe, appear distressed, and their condition is rapidly worsening. You are the dental nurse assisting the clinician.
Your Task
- Identify the condition
- Initiate immediate emergency management
- Position the patient appropriately
- Administer the correct first-line drug
- Escalate care and monitor the patient

Key Learning Points
- Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction affecting airway and circulation
- The patient should be laid flat with legs elevated (do not sit upright unless breathing is severely compromised)
- Adrenaline (IM) is the first-line treatment and must be given immediately
- Oxygen should be administered alongside adrenaline in severe cases
- If symptoms persist after 5 minutes, a repeat dose of adrenaline is required
