Model Answer / Ideal Response
A strong response should be supportive, clear, and professional.
Step 1 — Acknowledge the Patient's Concern
Start by responding professionally and without judgement.
Example:
“Even if someone brushes every day, some areas can sometimes be missed. Let’s go through how to improve this together.”
Avoid making the patient feel criticised.
Step 2 — Explain the Likely Cause
Explain that bleeding gums are often linked to plaque accumulation around the gumline, which can lead to gingivitis.
Use simple patient-friendly language rather than technical terminology.
Example:
“Sometimes plaque can build up around the gums, which may make them sore or bleed.”
Step 3 — Provide Appropriate Toothbrushing Advice
A patient should generally be advised to:
- Brush twice daily
- Brush for at least two minutes
- Use gentle circular movements
- Clean carefully around the gumline
- Use a soft or medium-bristled toothbrush
- Use fluoride toothpaste
Explain advice clearly and avoid overwhelming the patient with too much information at once.
Step 4 — Reassure the Patient
Patients may worry when gums bleed.
A professional response would reassure appropriately.
Example:
“Sometimes gums may bleed a little at first when cleaning improves, but this often settles as the gums become healthier.”
Step 5 — Check Understanding
Before ending the interaction:
- Ask if the patient has questions
- Confirm understanding
- Encourage ongoing oral hygiene improvement
Example:
“Does that make sense, or is there anything you’d like me to explain again?”
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Sounding judgemental or blaming the patient
- Saying “brush harder” to stop bleeding
- Using complicated clinical terminology
- Forgetting to recommend fluoride toothpaste
- Advising the patient to stop brushing bleeding areas
- Ending the conversation without checking understanding
