Model Answer / Ideal Response

A strong response should be supportive, practical, and easy for the parent to understand.

Step 1 — Acknowledge the Parent’s Concern

Begin professionally and avoid judgement.

Example:

“A lot of parents find brushing difficult at this age, but there are some simple ways we can help make it easier.”

This reassures the parent and encourages engagement.

Step 2 — Explain Appropriate Toothbrushing Advice

Explain that children should generally:

  • Brush twice daily
  • Brush for around two minutes
  • Use gentle brushing movements
  • Be supervised by a parent during brushing

Parental supervision helps ensure brushing is effective and reduces missed areas.

Step 3 — Recommend Appropriate Toothpaste

Advise the parent to use:

  • An age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste
  • A pea-sized amount for a child around this age

Explain that fluoride helps strengthen teeth and protect against decay.

Step 4 — Offer Practical Suggestions

If a child dislikes brushing:

  • Make brushing part of a routine
  • Use positive encouragement
  • Brush together where possible
  • Make brushing feel fun and consistent

Advice should be realistic and supportive.

Step 5 — Check Understanding

Before ending the conversation:

  • Ask if the parent has any questions
  • Confirm understanding of the advice

Example:

“Does that all make sense, or is there anything you would like me to explain again?”
