Practise recognising and managing a stroke emergency in a dental setting, following NEBDN OSCE expectations.
Scenario
A 70-year-old patient suddenly develops facial drooping and slurred speech during a dental appointment. They appear confused and have weakness on one side of their body. You are the dental nurse assisting the clinician.
Your Task
- Identify the condition
- Initiate immediate emergency response
- Assess the patient using FAST
- Position the patient appropriately
- Escalate care without delay

Key Learning Points
- Stroke occurs due to interruption of blood supply to the brain
- Use the FAST assessment (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) to recognise stroke
- Call 999 immediately — this is a time-critical emergency
- Do not administer GTN, as it is not indicated in stroke
- Administer oxygen only if the patient is hypoxic
