Practise recognising and managing a chest pain emergency in a dental setting, following NEBDN OSCE expectations.
Scenario
A 58-year-old patient develops severe central chest pain radiating to the left arm and jaw during a dental procedure.
Your Task
- Identify the condition
- Initiate immediate management with glucose
- Assess level of consciousness and swallowing ability
- Position the patient appropriately
- Escalate care if the patient does not improve

Key Learning Points
- Hypoglycaemia is caused by low blood glucose, often due to missed meals or excess insulin
- If conscious and able to swallow, give fast-acting glucose immediately
- If conscious but unable to swallow, use glucose gel or consider IM glucagon
- If drowsy, place the patient in the recovery position and monitor closely
- If the patient does not respond or becomes unconscious, call 999 immediately
